:: GAUTENG TALENT SUMMIT ::
A Call To Action For Business, Government, the HR Profession & Academia to address Gauteng's Talent Famine :
09 November 2006: Diarise This Date Now!

On the 28th September 2006, Premier Shilowa launched the 1st Annual Gauteng Talent Summit and initiated The Gauteng Provincial Government’s commitment to secure Top Talent  and achieve accelerated economic growth for Gauteng as the economic hub of South and Southern Africa.

South Africa was recently ranked no 45 in the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report.
The report says, “ The country does particularly well in a number of areas. The economic sophistication is reflected in high ranks for the innovation sub index (29), as well as property rights, private institutions, goods and financial market efficiency, business sophistication and innovation.

It’s main weaknesses concern those areas which are fundamental for achieving sustained growth, namely strong institutions, adequate infrastructure, a supportive macroeconomic environment and good basic health and education.

It further stated, “ Education and Training are emerging as key drivers of competitiveness. As the global economy has become more complex, it has become evident that to compete and maintain a presence in global markets it is essential to boost the human capital endowments of the labour force, whose members must have access to new knowledge, be constantly trained in new processes and in the operation of the latest technologies."

# 50% of South Africa’s undergraduate students fail to complte their degrees; only 30 % obtain their qualifications within 5 years of enrolling;

# Despite their best endeavours, the SETA’s have not responded adequately to the challenges of a rapidly emerging knowledge based economy in Gauteng or Nationally; indeed 'Top Talent' appears to be off their radar screens with 'Talent' being outside the scope of the legislative framework;
Key knowledge based economic sectors are having to deal with the twin paradoxes of high unemployment, and critical skills shortages (paradox 1), made far worse by the dislocation between the Top Talent skill sets required to reposition Gauteng as a knowledge-based and globally competitive City-Region economy.

On the 09th November, at the Wits Business School, an unparalleled line up of speakers and panellists will address these issues.

Bheki Sibiya will address the Paradox of High Unemployment and Top Talent Shortages.
